| | PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT | To join the conversation, become a member of the Oak Bay Local Facebook Group | Cougar sighting in Oak Bay reignites deer debate | Some residents in an Oak Bay neighbourhood were shaken this week after several reported seeing a cougar near Foul Bay Road towards Tomleys around 3 pm on Thursday. Conservation officers were in the area to deal with the cougar, who many believe was likely to be euthanized. | Aside from the fear and anxiety it triggered in the community over concerns for the safety of kids, small pets and all residents, the conversation turned to the possible reasons the cougar wandered into the area in the first place. Many believe that abundant deer in the area could have contributed to the problem, and were rethinking strategies to deal with the overpopulation, with some suggesting they should be relocated. Oak Bay has been divided on the deer situation for years, and has tried different strategies over the years in order to deal with the problem, including deer birth control. | | Group of seagulls gathers in odd formation at McNeill Bay Beach | An Oak Bay local reached out to the group, wondering why a group of seagulls regularly gathers in a cluster in the waters off of McNeill Bay Beach. Locals noticed that the group of birds briefly meet in on a concentrated spot before spreading and scattering, then meeting up again at the same point. Some eco-conscious contributors said it was likely a herring ball, which occurs when the herring swarm in a tightly packed formation rotating around a common centre. Herring do this as a last-ditch defensive measure, which they adopt when predators, such as seagulls, threaten them. Have you spotted this striking phenomenon? | |
