While many volunteered their suggestions, and some may have seen this as an innocent question at the outset, several community members reported the post for going against the group guidelines. Many noted that it is actually unlawful to remove material from beaches, and others stated that they can be purchased from gardening shops, farm stores, as well as local favourite Gravel Mart. | Oak Bay does have a bylaw in place that could land anyone who is caught taking sand or other material from an Oak Bay beach a fine of $50. Back in 2014, a Saanich man was issued a warning after an Oak Bay beachgoer reported seeing him haul away several large buckets of sand. Judging from the comments on the post, Oak Bay locals are protective of their beaches, and many may be willing to report any local beachcombing activities to bylaw officers. | |

| | The dangers of death cap mushrooms for pets | An Oak Bay local posted some heartbreaking photos of their puppy who was poisoned on their lawn after consuming the deadly death cap and scleroderma cepa mushrooms, which can be deadly to humans and pets. The owner of the adorable 14-week-old border collie/husky, Louna Sage, said the pup had spent over a week in hospital “fighting for her life in acute liver failure.” She is now slowly recovering at home. | The original poster also said they spotted several other death cap mushrooms along Cranmore Road this week. While Oak Bay firefighters have been helping get the word out, and get the mushrooms cleaned up, the community should also be on high alert as these mushrooms have been popping up in new and unexpected places this year, prompting a warning from the Municipality of Oak Bay this week. | |
