The incident took place at 2:30pm on Wednesday, July 19, when a white Jeep going to wards Oak Bay Avenue from Fairfield Road on Richmond Road did not stop at the intersection on Richmond. | The cyclist was bruised and injured while riding their white e-bike. Thankfully the driver did stop and apologize, saying their large vehicle had a blind spot, however the cyclist remains quite shaken and wants to understand what happened, believing the driver could have been distracted by their phone. | Other Oak Bay locals in the thread commented that they have seen an increase in distracted driving by both drivers and cyclists, and said many donβt come to a complete stop at intersections. While distracted driving affects everyone, cyclists are significantly more vulnerable if they are hit by a vehicle. Stay safe everyone! | |

It was posted after a letter to the editor in the Times Colonist suggested Oak Bay was rightly holding back on developing biking infrastructure, saying that its quiet streets are better off without them, at least for now. The commenter said Oak Bay was behind the City of Victoria in terms of building infrastructure for people to live in rather than driving through. The top contributor to the group suggested that the world needs to move beyond being dominated by private vehicles and praised the work done being done on Richardson to build more dedicated cycle routes through Oak Bay. | The letter was titled βThanks council, for holding back on bikesβ and was posted on July 14. Some commented against the bike lanes in Victoria, saying they are disruptive to some local businesses. Bike lanes are a divisive issue at the best of times, and this thread was no different. | | IN OTHER NEWS | | A disoriented-looking racoon wandered around Oak Bay this week | One local suggested that someone from the community check on it to make sure it wasnβt suffering. The original poster commented that they rarely see racoons walking around in the daytime, so they called Wild Arc as a precaution. Other community members commented that they were also familiar with this particular racoon, who is apparently blind, and often hugs fences and feels around to finds its way. Several others said he is known in the community to be a resilient, independent little guy. | |
