| | PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT | To join the conversation, become a member of the Oak Bay Local Facebook Group | Housing densification | In response to the announcement that the BC government will be assigning Oak Bay, along with other municipalities, to build new housing units within five years, many in the community had something to say. One local suggested this could be achieved if high density housing were allowed on the lands of Windsor Park adjacent to Newport Avenue. The commenter suggested further that towers should be at least 20 storeys in height and harbour a retail giant such as a Superstore on the street level. | Others suggested that if new buildings are coming up, there needs to also be a plan in how to manage new housing with other infrastructure, including hospitals, doctors, and schools. Many agreed that more affordable housing is needed for the community, so people can continue to live here, or move back if they left before it became so expensive. Several were concerned that these changes could negatively impact the community or change its character. | |
