Some commenters had a field day with offering to post their own home addresses, while others had some helpful suggestions. | One group, St Patrickβs Elementary School, uses the leftovers to make Christmas crackers for charity Christmas dinners. Also, the group Mamas for Mamas had many families who were looking, and 1330 Fairfield Gonzales Community Association has a food panty outside, where the candy could be dropped off. Another local said they pair theirs with hand warmers in mini ziplock bags to create care packages that they hand out to people, and include a little note in each bag that their kids write. | |

| | | Friends of Bowker Creek calls for schools to use living turf | The volunteer group, which has been at work for years to restore the habitat in Bowker Creek is urging the school district to learn from the two Astroturf breakdowns at Oak Bay High School, which prompted volunteers to clean up 60 pounds of rubber clumps this week. The group wants them to recognize that artificial turf does not belong beside Bowker Creek due to how it pollutes streams, worsens climate change effects and frees carcinogens into the environment. | They say the artificial turf contains known carcinogens and fish toxins. Notably, 6PPD-Quinone, a car tire chemical, which they say is a proven Coho salmon killer when it washes down storm drains in autumn rainstorms. Friends of Bowker Creek is part of a study of 6PPD-Quinone pollution in Vancouver Island streams and they want the school district to change back to living turf. Some commenters suggested fining the district in order to fund the remediation. | |
