Volunteer opportunities for older community members

An Oak Bay local reached out to the group in search of advice on what opportunities are available to older community members who are looking to volunteer their time for a good cause. Fortunately locals had many options to suit many passions, which are available at many organizations, including Oak Bay Volunteer Services, gardening opportunities at the Government House Gardens through Friends of the Government House Gardens Society, Volunteer Victoria and the Friends of Bowker Creek Society.

Who else felt that earthquake?

Oak Bay locals were shaken this week after an earthquake was felt by several people in and around Oak Bay around 4:05am on Thursday. Community members near Willows Beach, Hampshire, Foul Bay and other areas reported feeling their beds shaking, dishes breaking and being woken up from a dead sleep after a 3.8 magnitude earthquake occurred approximately 55 kilometres below the surface in the early morning hours on Thursday. There were no reports of damage, according to Earthquakes Canada, and none would be expected for this kind of quake.

If you did feel it, you can record your experience here, in a questionnaire from the Government of Canada. If this experience leaves you wanting to better assess earthquake risks in the region, and how to better prepare, you can learn more at Shakeout B.C. Those who are looking for more in-depth information on understanding the earthquake risk in the region, Oak Bay author and journalist Gregor Craigie’s book On Borrowed Time was written after decades of research into earthquake risk in this community, which is available at many local bookstores.
